“This set of objects combines the pressed steel top of a 1970's VW bug toy with a handbuilt sheet-metal iron. Much like other works of mine that utilize the vernacular form of a stove, an iron is a generator of heat used to flatten or smooth clothing. I like drawing parallels between the way objects generate heat and the way a body does. Similarly, by pulling in the automotive form, the object is complicated with history and the presence of engines (another site of heat and combustion). Using automotive fabrication techniques, including classic body work finishes like body filler sanded back or polishing, I am able to blend the two iconic forms into one. This conflates their inherent reference, history and utility: the 1950s nuclear family, together with 1970's flower power are brought to the present through their collaged identity. When making these sculptures, I was also thinking about art history and these objects' connection to artists like Rosemary Trockel, Merret Oppenheim, Richard Prince's 'Hoods' and of course Man Ray's 'Cadeau'. Although serialized, these objects are unique. Each one is handbuilt with raising and forming techniques, with individual colored body filler application, and a specific hole pattern cut for each base plate.”
